Totally boycotting Micheal's now!!!!

Do tell I go there often !
06/12/12 @ 9:41 pm by Sandys Sweets
I'm sick of their strick rules with their coupons! I will now ONLY shop at JoAnns!
06/12/12 @ 9:57 pm by cakedesire
R U talking about how they changed them so that you can only use the coupons for items that are not on sale? Used to be u could use them on the sale items and they at least took them and used them off of the regular price.
06/12/12 @ 10:24 pm by Debbie Blucher
joanns and michaels tend to have the same coupon policies. it seems that everytime I need something it is on sale.
06/12/12 @ 10:48 pm by sarasmiles
I know what you mean....gets frustrating.
06/12/12 @ 11:03 pm by Debbie Blucher
I don't understand why they have multiple coupons advertised, yet you can only USE one!! Atleast JoAnns will let you use more than one at a time!
06/12/12 @ 11:07 pm by cakedesire
So true Des they are frustrating.
06/12/12 @ 11:50 pm by Sandys Sweets
I've made friends with the management ans employees there, so i never have a problem. Some cupcakes around the holidays and I'm good for the year!!
06/13/12 @ 6:25 am by cakeswithcharacter
Jean is right, you just haven't found the right person yet. There has to be someone that can be bribed with cake! LOL
06/13/12 @ 8:18 am by ivyj2
Yeah Des...it really depends on who you get. I have had it go both ways.
06/13/12 @ 8:27 am by Sally Hackney
In this area JoAnn's will only let one coupon go per purchase as does Michaels. I actually have to go in purchase, put what I want on the next purchas at the register put my things in the car and return to pay for the next purchase with a coupon. I only go to those stores if I am looking for ideas. I never use the "W" brand of fondant but I do love the clay isle.

06/13/12 @ 2:18 pm by TraciiVCL
The coupons drive me crazy... one day they will let you use 2 and other days they won't. I am about to give up on them as well.
06/13/12 @ 8:55 pm by bonnie
But, at least if you can get past the b.s., sometimes you can get somewhat of a decent deal...

Morning cake lovelies! Would someone mind posting the address Kerry asked us to send our donations for Papi? My stupid computer won't let me scroll down far enough and I forgot to write it down. Also....where is the best place to order dummies? I definitely want one that sells them with beveled edges. Hope you are all having a great Tuesday!!!

I am teaching my Pug I made of all things, but we are only making a small version, about the size of two hands! I hope all goes well? I shall post some pictures a bit later on! Have fun!!

First lesson of the class over! I must I did not advertise this class, it is my class mates and they asked me teach them the pug. I was nervous prior to taking on this challenge as I knew how much work was involved and how much time it took me to make mine. I have only 6 hours to complete the whole thing! All I'm going to say is that they are having fun! It is very difficult to make and there are some interesting looking pugs
06/13/12 @ 3:53 pm by Justin Lynch
But as long as they are having fun, then I'm happy! Personally, I would not advertise classes that I'm teaching or going to teach as I still feel I have lots to learn, but between a group of friends is different! There are way too many people here, and I'm sure there who advertises such classes and they may feel ok about this whatever their level!
06/13/12 @ 3:55 pm by Justin Lynch
It has certainly been a learning curve for me today, even though I teach other things on a daily basis. Sugarcraft is an art that must be mastered by the teacher before professing to be a master! Where am I leading with this point? I don't know, but I certainly won't be taking this pug class out and about!! LOL. It's HARD!
06/13/12 @ 3:57 pm by Justin Lynch
I'm sure you did great! You're brave to do it - I don't feel ready to teach yet.
06/13/12 @ 4:02 pm by cakesbycarla
It was fun Carla, but I think they are realising how hard it is. But, as with all things, they can take away what they have learnt and practice to improve the skills!
06/13/12 @ 4:14 pm by Justin Lynch
LOL "interesting pugs" ;) .... friends are the best to try things out on!
06/13/12 @ 4:15 pm by cakedesire
Justin, I am positive the students loved the first class. A pug for the first Sugarcraft class is a great undertaking, you will do great.
06/13/12 @ 4:19 pm by redtiaraprincess
Oh my yes....that pug could not be done by just anyone. I bet they were all in awe of you!!!
06/13/12 @ 4:41 pm by Sally Hackney
Even my pug looks like a seal! Lmao. I was back n forth helping others and it's so hot in the kitchen the fondant dries way too fast and cracks, but they took the poss out of each other's pug which was funny!
06/13/12 @ 4:47 pm by Justin Lynch
Sounds great and I'm sure your students enjoyed it as well!!

I was having an interesting conversation the other day and the person I was speaking to asked why everyone was so enthralled with cake decorating these days. She said all she sees are pieces of fondant that have stamped out with cutters or molds and glued to hunks of styrofoam. She made the observation that cake decorating is no longer the art of transforming a real cake into a materpiece by piping royal or buttercream onto it. She said we are no longer true sugar artists, but sculpters who use clay made of

I did say that it takes talent to create beautiful flowers out of gumpaste and to build objects that look so real. She responded by saying most of the "masterpieces" people create are made of materials other than soft crumbly cake and the "art" of cake decorating was to be able to use only cake and and icings and pipe the decorations. That, she said, is where only the most talented cake artists would shine. She said we are like childrne cutting and pasting decorations on styrofoam that hardened to concrete and was fail safe to take to shows... but totally not to be replicated into a real, edible cake. She got me so confused that what ever I said just soudnded nonsensical. In the end I assured her we all could pipe intricate patterns and make royal icing flowers... and we all made cakes for consumers for their parties and special occasions. We were not just cut and paste artists. I think I won... but I am not sure I wonher over completly
06/10/12 @ 9:14 am by bonnie
That's funny Bonnie. I think some of the older, traditional techniques of stringwork and royal icing, buttercream piping etc isn't as popular anymore and it's just not done as often as a result. I think when it comes to cakes we're all artists and we all have our favorite mediums. We think nothing of a person using watercolors versus oil paint. I do think there are levels of difficulty obviously, but to say sculpting isn't art is pretty bold. I bet the guy who carved Venus would be offended not being called an artist! LOL. Everyone has their specialty. Maybe she was defensive because her preferred mediums are not as marketable for her right now?
06/10/12 @ 10:53 am by cakesbycarla
Sounds like an inquisitive one there Bonnie! Tell her to try some of the designs cutting and sticking...I'm sure she'll realise it's quite a lot more involved than that!
06/10/12 @ 11:20 am by Justin Lynch
She needs to take a long hard look at the winning cake from OSSAS last year. He had used all molds and cutouts, etc., but had done such intricate work with them it was amazing. And he didn't do it in a day. I read he said he had worked on it for months!!! Not that I don't admire those who do extnsion and stringwork. I sooo want to know how to do it also.
06/10/12 @ 11:29 am by Sally Hackney
It sounds like she has only experienced the under belly of cake designers. Maybe she hasn't had a truely exceptional cake?
06/10/12 @ 12:14 pm by TraciiVCL
Bonnie, I think what she meant was many cakers don't know how to do the stringwork and Lambeth styles. It is coming back if anyone looks at some of the new designs. I figure people who work on cakes know the time and work that goes into it and those that don't know cakes are clueless.
06/10/12 @ 3:25 pm by redtiaraprincess
I think she was just being a sour puss because she cannot sculpt and manipulate gumpaste/fondant. She is probably old school and sad because royal icing flowers are not in vogue any more. Since I am moving away from this area, I will not have to listen to her condescending attitude ever again! I think she worked at a local cake shop that does not have time to "cut and paste" and she is threatened by those of us who have the time to make custom designed cakes.
06/10/12 @ 5:15 pm by bonnie
Glad you are leaving the sour puss behind then!
06/10/12 @ 10:12 pm by Debbie Blucher
I would so love to learn the old techniques but the classes I just can't afford . I understand the cost it is a true talent and the teachers be serve every bit .
06/10/12 @ 10:26 pm by Sandys Sweets
Yeppers leave negative people behind they can suck the life out of you!!
06/10/12 @ 10:29 pm by TraciiVCL
Interesting - I am a royal icer who specialises in extension work, but I can create other styles of piped work. Do I create this style of cake for customers – not often as the price is normally more than they want to pay or it’s a case of ‘they only want sponge’ so due to the shelf life of the cake its not feasible. Yes at the moment there appears to be a lot of cut/stick or push the paste into a mold empty out/stick style of cakes around at the moment, but part of the reason for that is cost ie time is money. As to the comment re sculpted cakes - a lot of skill/knowledge is required to sculpting a cake.
06/11/12 @ 8:40 am by Christine Flinn
Christine... how wonderful that you can do all that inticate piping! I came into cake decorating just as the fondant/gumpaste craze took off and therefore never took the time to learn to pipe... at least not with any skill. As I told my afore mentioned conversation partner. There does not seem to be a demand for that sort of hand piping from customers... they want what they see on TV and in magazines. I did not stop to think that it would be cost prohibative to hand pipe a wedding cake. How did they make all those beautiful cakes in the 50's and 60's before Americans discovered fondant?
06/11/12 @ 8:27 pm by bonnie
A lot of the cakes from the 50's/60's in the UK were the heavy scroll type ie reasonably quick to pipe, as to the piped flowers a lot of bakeries bought those in by the box load
06/12/12 @ 5:01 am by Christine Flinn
OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! They bought those flowers premade?? I always thought they spent hours piping them! LOL
06/12/12 @ 6:36 am by bonnie
Some bakeries would have made boxes and boxes of flowers in their quiet periods, but on the whole most bakeries bought the flowers in as it was more cost effective.

It suddenly occurred to me this morning that it would be fun to share the details as to how you got to Fantourage.

I started because the PR dept sent out a circular saying it would be a great way to connect with fans, the fan thing wssn't up my alley, but friends yes, so thought why not. In the beginning I was all alone just me and look at where we have all come and what wonderful friendships have evolved. We have met at events, shared red carpet moments, lost precious friends, shared the great moments and the sad ones, who knew what a tight knit family we would become.
06/09/12 @ 4:10 pm by kerry
It is a good thing the PR department sent out the circular. Kerry we have met so many people along the way due to that memo. How fun is that.
06/09/12 @ 4:48 pm by redtiaraprincess
i cant quite remember but it was in late summer of 2009 that i found my family of cakkers here and have never looked back. thank you so much kerry for having this place for us to come to.

I think it will be two years ago this december that I found this site. I had seen a post on Cake Central from Andrea about her audition for FN. So I posted a response asking how she got asked to audition and she said she was asked through this site. So I checked it out and found something much better than I ever expected. It's my new go to place for cake talk and I love it. I rarely hang out on CC anymore. I have a great group of people hear to ask questions to and just talk with for fun. Cake and friends - who could ask for more??

I was invited via Mrs V, and it was the best invitation I have had! It led me here to the most amazing group of people I have met throught the internet; but they are no longer "people" they are friends, and very good friends at that! I will be forever grateful for you coming into my life, you really are amazing friends and I look forward to seeing you all again soon! :o)

Isn't it just the "truth"? I accidentally (or by divine intervention) stumbled onto this site. I was so hesitant at first and didn't even know you're names ....just the name you had posted by your pics. I started out just adding a little post to some of your post and then gradually got really comfortable and got to know you as people and ...."wow". Now I can't even imagine my life without all of you in it!!!

I had talked to Kerry a few times on Face Book and found her to be quite delightful. One day I get a message from a stranger in my email saying Kerry needs me to help wiht a problem person in her fan chatroom. (The stranger was Edna, btw) Anyway, I joined this site and became on of the FAb 5, who like mongooses, drove the cobra from this sacred place! It was a blast and I have never meet such a hoot'n hollar'n bunch of crazies in my life. I was hooked and the rest is history. Losing Papi was a big blow to me and I find it hard to come here and act silly and inappropriate like we often times were prone to do. We walked the edge, constantly worried Kerry would call us out on being over the line. I am not a competition caker, I am barely beyond a novice decorator. But I was always accepted as one of the gang here. I am rambling... have no idea what I have just written because you can only see the last few words that were typed. But any way, I love you all and especially our sweet Kerry.

I know I'm not on here very much but I saw the link on Kerry's FB page. I do read a lot of post's, and look at people's cakes! :) This one of the BEST place's for cake people!!

We are glad you finally figured it out Dianne, better late than never.
06/10/12 @ 8:30 pm by kerry
Everyone is kind to each other here, which was not the case on CC and I was often the target of very mean spirited comment and some outright lies were quoted as truth.
06/10/12 @ 8:33 pm by kerry
I know CC has some very good people but there are some bossy ones who think they know everything, here everyone has their say no matter what.
06/10/12 @ 8:34 pm by kerry
We have definitely become family here.
06/10/12 @ 9:53 pm by Sandys Sweets
Isnt' it amazing, Kerry, that people think they "know" someone simply from print, television, and comments? Kinda dumb.
06/10/12 @ 10:17 pm by Debbie Blucher
I think I got an email invitation. I truely don't remember (that's an age thing) I really like the supportive atmosphere here. I am not a fan of some of the people who go on other boards & don't even think before they post. It makes me sooooooo mad. When you post you have had a bad day , I don't expect or appreciate reading a post from someone giving kudos to the person who gave the poster a hard time or caused the bad day. I tend to speak my mind and then get in trouble for it. I don't like bullies & I will call them out on it. It sometimes just becomes too easy for people to type something on the key board and hit enter without even thinking about that other person's feelings. Ok stop ranting now Trac, LOL Anywhoo this place is peaceful, knowledgeable, funny, sometimes heartbreaking but always loyal all rolled into one! I'd love to be able to do the meet & greet face to face but for now I'm ok with this little piece of heaven :) OMG I'm a wind bag BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA
06/10/12 @ 11:05 pm by TraciiVCL
Tracii... I remember when I first "met" you. I could never learn to spell your name right, but you never said anything about it. My other friends called me out on it several times, until I finally got it right. To this day I stil put an "E" on the end of Justin. But that is because I have a friend named Justine. Bless his baby heart, he never says a thing about it.
06/11/12 @ 6:55 am by bonnie
Bonnie I didn't?? Most time I tell people "Hey I have 2 ii's, I'm not a cyclops? HA HA HA it's not a huge thing for me Only on legal stuff does it really matter. Justine... HA HA HA that's funny ..oh sorry inside voice HE HE
06/11/12 @ 8:40 am by TraciiVCL
Too true Sandy!
06/11/12 @ 7:40 pm by kerry
Yes, Tracii you are right, here it is freedom to speak and people are respectful and they share share share, which I find is refreshing.
06/11/12 @ 11:03 pm by kerry
Kerry... we all came here to kind of honor you. You were this TV star who we were all in awe of... and you ran this cake show and wrote this book. I thought each and every one of us would pee our pants when you first spoke to each of us by name. Now you are just one of us. And we are all friends... I notice that, as in real life, people drift in and out and when they come back everyone is ready to catch up on their news as if they never left. It is like having coffee or tea with your friends over at Katharine's place. I love how we do not bicker or get mad with one another and if we do have a misunderstanding we can talk it out. I have laughed and cried and learned and grown from knowing all my friends here. All I can say is Thanks to you Kerry... you made this all happen for us.
06/12/12 @ 6:33 am by bonnie
Bonnie, that is exactly right, we are all at tea!

Good morning all! I am putting off the task of having to scrap wall paper today...I'd rather watch paint dry! Lol. Hopefully I will be making my reservation for Tulsa today; I don't want to miss out on not getting a room at the DoubleTree! Have a great Sunday!!!

Justin, are you staying for the class this year?
06/10/12 @ 8:21 am by partyart101
Oh Justin....I just got thru doing that type of thing and I know I am done for awhile!!! It is NO FUN! It's just at the end and everything looks so good you are so happy you did it!!!
06/10/12 @ 8:25 am by Sally Hackney
OMG! I know the pains of scraping wall paper. My entire house was covered in gaudy wallpaper when we bought it and I have scraped every single room!!! It sucks! LOL! But - I did learn a lot. A) Use one of those scratchers to poke little holes in it. B) Then spray it down with a mixture of fabric softener and warm water. C) Let it soak a few minutes (make sure it's good and wet and wait about 5 mins) and then scrape a stroke or two and see if you can lift a bit of the paper up. Sometimes, you can start it going and pull it off in big chunks.
06/10/12 @ 10:43 am by cakesbycarla
After you're done wipe the walls down really well with a diluted soap and water mixtures so it's clean and will take your paint later. If there's damage afterwards (sometimes wallpaper isn't applied properly and takes bits of drywall with it when you remove it) you can always texturize your wall before painting. But that is a whole other DIY lesson. Hope it goes well for you! Holler if you need help!
06/10/12 @ 10:47 am by cakesbycarla
Leslie, I am staying for the class yes! I cannot wait! I am hoping to buy all my materials there though as it will be easier...hopefully! Lol.
06/10/12 @ 11:21 am by Justin Lynch
I managed to get out of the wallpaper scraping; my bro did it all! Warn soapy water works a treat though Carla; a steamer is even better!! :o)
06/10/12 @ 11:21 am by Justin Lynch
You have no idea how badly I want to attend... I would have to take a part time job just to be able to pay for it :(

I have gaudy wall paper in my new house in the kitchen/breakfast area. My darling son said he would have it down and walls repainted by the time we got out there in Sept. He is also replacing my counter tops with a black/brown granite and taking out the stainless steele sink and replacing it with a chocolate brown granite one. I can't wait to see it!
06/10/12 @ 5:27 pm by bonnie
Wow, Bonnie, you have a gooood son!
06/10/12 @ 10:14 pm by Debbie Blucher
Debbie, he is an amazing son with an amazing wife and kids. He is also installing new can lights in the vaulted ceilings of my living room and rows of them in the kitchen so I can get rid of the flourescent light that is in there now. Oh, did I mention he removed a bunch of upper cabinets and broke through the wall into the living room in order to build me a breakfast bar? LOL I could go on and on... but I am starting to sound like a blow hard. But trust me, there is no other kid like him in this world!
06/11/12 @ 6:59 am by bonnie
I wish my sons would take lessons, lol. So I take it you are moving soon to be by them, or?

Dianne..I have never seen you post before the other day..but assumed after you wrote the sweet, kind words to me about the accident scene that you must have been involved in one yourself. I so hope my postings didn't drudge up any painful memories for you. I can't even imagine the horror of being the victim in an accident like that. If I caused you any discomfort at all by posting that please forgive me. I was so shook up from it all and didn't stop to think there might be others on here who have been on the other end of that kind of tragedy. Millions of sugar hugs coming your way from me!!
06/11/12 @ 8:44 am by Sally Hackney
sally thanks for your kind words but I'm good you did not say anything that would hurt me. in 2008 i had overian cancer and in 2009 I got pnumonia(sp) and lost my legs when it turned septic. I just know that any thing that is unexpected in our lies can be tragic and hard to deal with but we can handle anything with our faith and a great support system from family and friends it is true that time heals all wounds but time does not always erase the memories. I am at pease with my life and it is a wonderful feeling. I don't want anyone to worry about saying something they think might upset me because it wont! I just was trying to give you a little comfort from one sugar friend to another!
